Bus drivers' strike continues in Phoenix suburbs
Negotiators for striking transit bus drivers in eastern Phoenix suburbs and the national bus company they work for negotiated Friday, the second day of a work stoppage affecting tens of thousands of riders.
The strike began Thursday, shutting down 40 routes in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe, along with express routes from those cities to Scottsdale and Phoenix. Bus drivers reject proposal; strike imminent
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433 officials said at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday that 95 percent of its voting southeast Valley bus drivers have rejected bus operator First Transit’s final contract proposal and that a strike is set for midnight.
A strike would shut down service in Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler and parts of Scottsdale and Ahwatukee for the Thursday-morning commute. Phoenix transit officials said Tuesday that a strike would halt 40 of Valley Metro RPTA’s 101 Phoenix-area bus lines.Watch the full video → Read More →
ATU Local 1433 Agrees to contract extension to honor the fallen heros in Prescott fire
The Amalgamated Transit Union announced this afternoon that it had agreed to a contract extension with First Transit to expire July 31, 2013 at 11:59PM.
Local 1433, which represents bus and light rail operators, service workers, and mechanics across Mesa, Tempe, Phoenix, and Yuma agreed to extend the existing contracts of Veolia Transportation on the Mesa and Tempe yards respectively. The Union credited the involvement of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton for temporarily avoiding a work stoppage that would affect hundreds of workers and thousands of passengers.Read More →
